Rubylith is a red masking film which can be cut, very precisely. It can be used in the darkroom with orthochromatic materials since these are not sensitive to red light. The print is white under the rubylith, allowing only the pregnant image of me to be printed.
The color is a means of further retouching the photograph in an attempt to increase verisimilitude.
