source material for photographic montage

I draw from a sizable collection of photographs I have made in travels, over many years. In this gallery, in addition to the source image, I have tried to include its location in the finished collage or montage.

I have a large collection of "straight" photographs, from which I draw, to make the composite photographs. These are all photographs I have taken while traveling or ones where I have hired models to pose for my camera.

Romania
The Sucevita Monastery, built between 1581 and 1601, is located in the Northeast corner of Romania, in a town with the same name. This is one of Romania's many "tatooed monasteries" in Bucovina.

This is an example of how an image makes its way into the embroidered collage even if it is not in the initial computer montage. The top insert is the telephoto shot on site of the abandoned house. The bottom insert is a detail of that sink image embroidered and collaged into the final piece, "Meissen Island, at Oak Street Beach, in Chicago.

In this section, you'll find some of the source images used to create two of the more recent embroidered collages. Frames may have inserts identifying the location of the source image within the composited frame.

These are two short videos of the making of the piece, "Meissen Island, at Oak Street Beach, in Chicago." The top frame documents the way in which collage elements are placed into the composition. The bottom frame is a close up of the hand embroidery process.
